What Is Leaky Gut Syndrome? The Truth On This Condition And How To Fix It

What Is Leaky Gut Syndrome? The Truth On This Condition And How To Fix It The support for leaky gut syndrome is picking up.  According to Dr. Andrew Weil, M.D. , leaky gut is when the intestinal lining is damaged, which makes it harder to filter nutrients and protect your insides. This leads to bacteria and toxins, waste and undigested proteins and fats to essentially leak out into the bloodstream, he writes on his website. The thought is that this causes a reaction, which could lead to  autoimmune diseases , abdominal bloating, gas, cramps, and a slew of other health problems. While Weil is open to the idea of leaky gut, many doctors are not. Read :  Why You Shouldn't Go Gluten-Free If You Don't Have Celiac Disease Dr. Robynne K. Chutkan, M.D.,  writes that leaky gut is in fact a clinical diagnosis , but there isn’t a test that proves you have it with 100 percent certainty. However, she recommends the Intestinal Permeability Test, which shows if there is an associatio

After Smelling Your Breath, New Device Can Diagnose 17 Diseases Including Cancers, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Kidney Disease Imagine finding out what’s making you feel sick just by breathing. That idea is the goal of a new technology that researchers are saying can detect 17 different diseases just by “smelling” a patient’s breath. Those medical conditions include are as varied as certain cancers, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis and kidney disease, among others. Read:  Lasers and Ocean Bacteria Kill Cancer The device is able to distinguish between the diseases because it picks up on something called volatile organic compounds that the diseases cause to be emitted in a person’s breath. According to the researchers, the 17 conditions all resulted in 13 specific compounds being r

Study: Many Paramedics Ignore Hand Hygiene Rules

Study: Many Paramedics Ignore Hand Hygiene Rules By Robert Preidt HealthDay Reporter FRIDAY, Feb. 1, 2019 (HealthDay News) -- Paramedics have a "remarkably low" rate of compliance with hand hygiene standards, which could put patients at risk for deadly infections, according to a new report. For the study, researchers observed 77 paramedics in Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Australia as they dealt with 87 patients. The paramedics' compliance with basic hygiene was high: short, clean nails (83 percent); hair short or tied back (99 percent); no jewelry worn (62 percent). But many ignored World Health Organization guidelines in five situations when cleansing with soap and water or an antiseptic rub is needed. Too many relied instead on gloves, suggesting they care more about protecting themselves than patients, the study authors said. "[Hand hygiene] is about preventing the spread of microbes and thus protecting the patient. Whereas the use of gloves primaril

Knee Arthritis Rates Have Doubled, But Scientists Can’t Figure Out Why

Knee Arthritis Rates Have Doubled, But Scientists Can’t Figure Out Why Individuals born after World War II are twice as likely to develop knee arthritis, also known as knee osteoarthritis, than those born in generations before them, a new Harvard  study  suggests. However, the reason for more arthritis cases is not clear, and researchers are racing to find the cause in order to prevent the problem from spreading. Logical culprits, such as rising obesity rates and longer lifespans, do not appear to be behind the arthritis increase. Instead, something else, likely related to our modern environments, is behind Americans’ failing knee health, and researchers are reviewing human fossil records to figure out what it is. Ancient Disease For the study, researchers looked at more than 2,000 ancient human skeletons dating as far back as 6,000 years ago. This data was then combined with information on human knee health from early industrial times (such as the 1800s) and from post-moder
